Berkeley Christmas scenes 2020

LATEST ADDITION:   29th December 2020.

Berkeley has plenty of Christmassy displays giving us seasonal sparkle.   Photos of Christmases present and past added throughout December.

These photos bring to you Berkeley’s festive mood whilst celebrating the local sights.  These photos were taken in the lead up to Christmas 2020 except where specified otherwise.  They are generally shown with the most recent additions at the top.

The ones that got away...

This season, many cute creatures can be seen around town

Berkness has created a Mid Winter Safari quiz around Berkeley town centre with its many Christmas displays in shop and house windows.

Berkeley was once a key market town and had many more shops – and many, many pubs!  Some of the old houses still have the old shop windows which the owners take advantage of to create big, bright displays.

People have put a lot of time and effort into their displays and I would like to say a big thank you to them all.  If you are one of them reading this, “Brilliant and thank you!”

I had a lot of fun going out several times – rain or shine – to hunt around Berkeley and capture the various creatures and characters which feature in the Berkeley Mid Winter Safari quiz.

In the end, I had too many characters to include whilst keeping the quiz to a reasonable length of 24.  So above is a selection of just some of the ones that escaped.

The High Street lanterns give a warm Christmas Eve feeling...

The lanterns have been passed down generations of home owners

Berkeley High Street’s traditional lanterns are iconic.  They conjure up a traditional feel good factor.  They also give a beautiful light which is difficult to match with modern fairy lights – though they are still improving.  I wonder if it is because the lanterns are few but large, whereas modern lights tend to be many but small!

A new forest sprouting in Berkeley High Street...

Has all the recent rain caused this forest to sprout?

This is just one of the many Christmas window displays around Berkeley.

Many took part in the daily light-ups from December 1st to 24th which were in aid of the Children’s charity Winston’s Wish.  The light-ups  were broadcast live in the Sharpness & Berkeley Nativity Windows group on FB.

The magic of Christmas past...

Bespoke Cottage has a traditional toy shop window

The window display of Bespoke Cottage in the High Street is the stuff of dreams and happy endings!  It truly makes one feel like a kid in a candy shop!

I want to play with all the toys!

And deeper inside can be seen a cosy, traditional living room with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree.

It makes one feel all warm and lovely inside!

And they all lived happily ever after!

Cool white & warm white in Berkeley town centre...

Town hall & church in Salter Street at dusk

The warm amber interior lighting seen through the windows of the United Reform Church creates a dramatic contrast with the cool white Christmas lights of Berkeley town hall – all set against a deep blue sky at dusk this December.

One of many good reasons to pop into Berkeley town centre...

This house in Salter Street is one of many raising money for charity

Each day from 1st to 24th December, a house in Berkeley plus a house in Sharpness or Hamfallow are broadcasting the switch on of their Christmas lights.  This is in aid of Winston’s Wish, a child bereavement charity – donations can be made on justgiving.com

Las Vegas or Lynch Road...

Big skies by day, fairy lights by night II

I took a photo of this house around sunset earlier in December – but just could not resist going back to get a shot in the dark.

A fairy light house on Lynch Road...

Big skies by day, fairy lights by night I

This image with its picket fence and the shape of the house reminds me of American folk paintings.

The promising sunset colours never transpired so I might be back to snap this one again.

A new work of art in Berkeley....

The large cedar tree in front of the Mariners Arms

This display took the tree climber from K.A.D Total Tree Care over 7 hours to install 2000 LEDs on 200 metres of wire!

Watch out for other colours and various light sequences to fit the mood.

Anyone seen the remote control?

The traditional Christmas lanterns of Berkeley High Street...

December dusk down Berkeley High Street

These lovely lanterns come out year after year and still look fantastic!

Great to see Santa getting his eyes tested in Berkeley...

Armstrong's display on the corner of the High Street - Christmas 2019

He will be so well prepared for his busy month ahead.  Though I don’t suppose spectacles are much help half way down a chimney!

See you again in 2021...

Berkness hopes you enjoyed the photos and wishes everyone a merry Christmas, a happy New Year, and all the best throughout 2021.
